East Second Street

For nearly 50 years KTWO TV studios were at 4200 east Second Street in Casper. At first they were not much more than an oversized garage. With the success of the station, offices and a stylish facade were added on the perimeter.  But there was more than met the eye.  Buried deep underground were bunkers to allow the Conelrad function in the event of nuclear attack, (AM broadcasting on 1240) with generators and air filters.

Speaking of air, the old style 2 inch videotape machines required compressed air, the noisy compressor being in a shed behind the building.  Condensation would build up in the lines and occassionally freeze up in the winter time. The night crew at K2 would assemble a 2 inch videotape with all the commercials needed to run the next day called the spot reel.  Prior to 1980 film was also extensively used and there was a developing lab to process B/W news footage. That was replaced by U-matic tape which allowed field recording in color.

Programming was sent to the transmitter on Casper Mountain by a microwave link (STL).  The transmitter tower was also a relay point on the microwave that brought network programs from Denver, so there was a return link (TSL) to get these programs into the studio.  The photo shows the satellite dishes that were installed later to get the network programs (circa 1985).

The studio on East Second Street is no longer in use, as most of Casper television (2, 14, 20, 26) has been consolidated on Skyline Drive and managed by Mark Nalbone. PBS 6 comes from Riverton. It is rumored that the channel 13 studio is large enough to house a casino.
